After two seasons off, the Gazette Cup boys high school soccer tournament returned last week.

And a familiar champion, South Point, enjoyed the event more than anyone else as the Red Raiders won their ninth title in 11 championship game appearances for a tournament that began in 1993.

Tony Baker scored two goals and Connor Proud one for coach Chris Baity’s team in a 3-0 victory at tournament host Stuart Cramer.

High school football

The ever-changing schedule continues to change as Ashbrook, Clover, Huss and South Point have had games cancelled and another game – East Lincoln vs. Forestview – has been moved to Cramer due to field conditions at Forestview.

Ashbrook’s game at T.C. Roberson has been cancelled.

Clover’s game with longtime rival York has been cancelled and the Blue Eagles will now host Charlotte’s Myers Park on Friday.

Huss’ game at Hibriten on Friday has been cancelled; Huss officials hope to reschedule the game later in the season.

And South Point’s junior varsity and varsity games at R-S Central slated for Sept. 2 and Sept. 3 have been cancelled.

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ full 2021 schedule as they prepare for their preseason finale on Thursday at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Carolina head coach Matt Rhule said after Monday’s practice session that he planned to use his starters for much of the first half of the game, though running back Christian McCaffrey’s play may be limited if he plays at all.
