Following Crest’s 44-38 home victory over Gaffney, S.C., on Friday night, Chargers’ players stormed the bank underneath the scoreboard at Sid Bryson Stadium to celebrate the win.
Why the celebration over a team Crest hadn’t played in 25 seasons?
Certainly the 20-mile distance between the schools played a role as Crest fans are certainly aware of the Indians’ 18 all time South Carolina state titles as well as the frequent matches the two schools have had in preseason controlled scrimmages over the years.
But perhaps more importantly, Crest knew it had accomplished something that was rare in the rich high school football history of Cleveland County by simply beating Gaffney.
Not only is Gaffney 14-6-2 all time against Crest (2-1), Kings Mountain (2-0) and Shelby (9-5-2), the Indians hadn’t lost to a Cleveland County school since Shelby won 7-6 at Gaffney in 1960. The streak of dominance included four victories over Shelby and two apiece over Crest and Kings Mountain.
Additionally, the state of South Carolina has generally done well – especially since 1961 – against the four Cleveland County schools who all have extraordinary success that includes 81 combined conference titles and 27 combined state titles.
While Burns has never played a South Carolina school in its history, Crest is 2-3-1, Kings Mountain is 14-8 and Shelby is 10-12-2 against schools from south of the border to give Cleveland County schools a slim 26-23-3 margin.
Kings Mountain’s record is bolstered by its 7-1 mark against Blacksburg with all of those matchups coming from 1924 to 1938.
Since 1961, Cleveland is a miserable 2-14-1 against South Carolina schools.
Crest has each of the non-losses, including the first non-loss in the history of its school when the Chargers tied Pacolet 6-all in their second game of their inaugural 1967 season that ended with a 0-9-1 overall record.
Crest’s other win came in 2003 when the Chargers won 17-14 at Marlboro County.
