The 101st “Battle of Buffalo Creek” was a thriller as Kings Mountain held off a late Shelby comeback for a 28-26 victory at Shelby’s Blanton Memorial Stadium to highlight area high school football openers.

In the oldest rivalry in N.C., Kings Mountain won for the third time in four years, including two straight at Shelby.

Kings Mountain outgained Shelby 391-390 behind Lamont Littlejohn’s 221 yards passing with four touchdowns. Shelby got 355 yards passing from Daylin Lee and three touchdowns.

Pro football

New England scored 10 fourth quarter points to snap a 10-all tie and beat the visiting Carolina Panthers 20-10 on Friday night.

The Panthers didn’t play either of the two quarterbacks pursuing the starting job – Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold – as P.J. Walker (8 of 15 for 107 yards with two interceptions) and Matt Corral (9 of 15 for 58 yards) took all the snaps at quarterback with Corral injuring his foot in the fourth quarter.

Carolina took an early 3-0 lead on Zane Gonzalez’s 27-yard field with 2:17 left in the first quarter and got its lone touchdown on Tae Hayes’ 50-yard interception return.
