League City (Tex.) Post 554 made a first inning run stand up for a 1-0 victory over Lincoln (Neb.) Post 3 Tuesday night in the 2023 American Legion World Series championship game at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C.
The result gives the Lone Star state its first champion in the 96-year history of the event and came in the fourth 1-0 result in championship game history.
Left-hander Jacob Cyr, who threw the third no-hitter in ALWS history in Thursday’s opening game, was sharp again while throwing his second shutout in six days.
Cyr, who was named George W. Rulon American Legion Player of the Year in a postgame awards ceremony, allowed six hits but worked out of jams in the third and fourth innings behind some exceptional defensive plays.

The NBA announced the four-game slate for group play of the NBA In-Season Tournament, a new annual competition that begins for all 30 teams in the 2023-24 season.
The Charlotte Hornets’ schedule for the event begins at Washington on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m., continues with home games against Miami (Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.) and Milwaukee (Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.) and closes on Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at New York.
Eight of the league’s 30 teams will advance to the knockout rounds, the teams with the best record in each of the six groups and a “wild cards” team from each conference with the best second-place records in group play.
The prize pool includes $500,000 each for players on the winning team of the Championship and $200,000 each for players on the runner-up finisher with $100,000 each for players on losing teams in the semifinals and $50,000 each for players on losing teams in the quarterfinals.
The 67 overall games across both stages of the In-Season Tournament will count toward the regular-season standings except for the championship game.
And the teams that don’t qualify for the Knockout Rounds will each play two regular-season games on Dec. 6 and Dec. 8 that will be announced following the conclusion of group play.
