Troy, Ala., and Idaho Falls, Id. won Monday semifinal games at the American Legion World Series to advance to Tuesday’s 7 p.m. championship game.

Troy, playing in its first-ever ALWS, rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to beat Midland, Mich., 5-3. Troy seeks to become the second Alabama champion; Tuscaloosa, Ala., won that state’s only ALWS title in 1967.

Idaho Falls, which pursues an unprecented third straight title, rallied from behind then held off a late rally by Shrewsbury, Mass., to win 5-4 in its semifinal game.

College basketball

One of the area’s top women’s basketball players, Shelby’s Ally Hollifield, announced her commitment to play at Gardner-Webb on Monday.

A 5-foot-5 guard, Hollifield has averaged 14.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.5 steals in 68 career games. She also was named most the Golden Lions’ most outstanding player after their 2021 state championship game victory.

 

 

 

 

High school volleyball

Kings Mountain d. Highland Tech 3-0 (25-19, 25-6, 25-8): Camden Pasour (31 service points, 7 digs, 19 assists), Meile Songaila (9 service points, 19 kills, 6 digs and 10 serve receptions), Paige Bagwell (6 service points, 8 kills, 4 digs and 9 assists) and Caroline Barber (14 serve receptions and 9 digs) led Kings Mountain in the season-opener. Kings Mountain hosts East Lincoln on Tuesday in its next match.
Kings Mountain also the junior varsity match 2-0 (25-8, 25-7) behind Abigail Hedgepath (12 service points, 2 kills and 12 assists), Megan Harrison (5 service points and 2 kills) and Kenzlie Morris (11 service points and 3 kills).
