The Indianapolis Colts scored 11 points in the final 7:43 on Sunday afternoon to ruin the Carolina Panthers preseason opener.
The Colts, who got six of those points on a 1-yard touchdown run by former Charlotte 49ers running back Benny LeMay, won the contest on Eddy Pinero’s 30-yard field with seven seconds left in the game.
Carolina (0-1) concludes its three-game preseason schedule with two home games – Saturday at 7 p.m. against Baltimore and Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. against Pittsburgh.
The Panthers got four field goals from kicker Joey Slye (29, 28, 41 and 32 yards) and a 7-yard touchdown pass from P.J. Walker to Tommy Tremble.
Indianapolis outgained Carolina 427 to 313 and committed three turnovers to the Panthers’ one.
Statistical leaders for Carolina, who sat starters like quarterback Sam Darnold, running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receivers D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson among others, were quarterbacks Walker (10 of 21 for 161 yards and one touchdown) and Will Grier (six for 10 for 31 yards), running back Chuba Hubbard (seven carries for 80 yards) and wide receiver Terrace Marshall (three catches for 88 yards).
A 2016 Butler High graduate who rushed for 3,232 yards in four seasons for the Charlotte 49ers, LeMay picked up 26 yards and one touchdown on six carries for the Colts. LeMay signed with Indianapolis after going to training camp with the Cleveland Browns in 2020.
