Area high school football teams have completed preseason practices and scrimmages.
And on Friday, the 2021 regular season will begin.
Here’s the schedule for opening games for teams from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties:

High school volleyball
Gaston Day improved to 3-0 on the season with wins over Greensboro Caldwell Academy (3-0 by 25-20, 26-24, 25-22) and Fayetteville Freedom Christian Academy (3-0 by 25-9, 25-14, 25-9). The Spartans host Charlotte Country Day in their next match on Thursday.
Pro basketball
The Charlotte Hornets lost an 11-point lead in the final six minutes to the Toronto Raptors in an 80-79 Las Vegas Summer League loss.
Toronto trailed 77-66 with 5:53 to play but outscored Charlotte 14-2 the rest of the game. Charlotte’s Xavier Sneed missed two free throws with one second left that could’ve tied or won the game for the Hornets, who fell to 0-4 in league games.
The Hornets close out their Las Vegas Summer League schedule on Monday at 7 p.m. against the Chicago Bulls.
