The Carolina Panthers played four quarterbacks – starting recent trade acquisition Baker Mayfield – and survived a Washington Commanders’ rally directed by former University of North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell before winning 23-21 Saturday afternoon in their 2022 preseason opener.

Mayfield, acquired from the Cleveland Browns in July, started for coach Matt Rhule’s team and completed four of seven passes for 45 yards in his only offensive series. The only bad news for Mayfield was a botched exchange from center Pat Elflein in the red zone that led the drive to end in a field goal.

“Our mentality is best suited to just put our heads down and go to work,” Mayfield told reporters afterward about the training camp competition he has waged with 2021 Panthers’ starter Sam Darnold. “Just trying to improve each day, and the best man’s going to win.”

Darnold replaced Mayfield for Carolina’s second and third possessions and finished with two of three passing for 16 yards and an 8-yard TD throw to Rashard Higgins.

Two other quarterbacks, veteran P.J. Walker and rookie Matt Corral, played the rest of the game for Carolina. Walker went 10 of 19 for 136 yards and Corral was one for nine for 11 yards.

The Panthers didn’t play running back Christian McCaffrey or wide receiver D.J. Moore, who are considered Carolina’s top offensive weapons.

Howell, once considered a potential first-rounder before falling to the fifth round after his junior season at North Carolina, went nine of 16 for 143 yards and scored on two touchdowns runs, the latter coming just before a 2-point-conversion put Washington ahead 21-20 with 2:26 left.

Corral then led a penalty-aided drive that ended with Zane Gonzalez’s 45-yard game-winning field goal with 24 seconds left.

Carolina visits the New England Patriots on Friday – and after the teams hold joint practices next week in Foxboro, Mass.
