The Carolina Panthers’ opening act of the 2023 season came up flat as they dropped their preseason opener by a 27-0 score to the New York Jets on a hot and humid Saturday afternoon at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.

The game, which came in Frank Reich’s debut as Carolina head coach, saw rookie and recent No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young start and play three series before 2022 3rd round selection Matt Corral playe quarterback for the rest of the game.

Young completed 4 of 6 passes for 21 yards and directed one first down drive in his three offensive series for the Panthers. Corral went 15 of 22 for 126 yards with one interception.and the Panthers picked up 9 first downs under his direction.

Spencer Brown had 8 carries for 34 yards to lead the Panthers’ 52-yard rushing attack and Carolina had 165 yards total offense. Derek Wright was the receiving leader with 3 catches for 35 yards.

The Jets, whose veteran star quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t play, racked up 333 yards total offense behind quarterbacks Zach Wilson (14 for 23 for 120 yards and 1 TD) and Tim Boyle (9 for 10 for 84 yards and 2 TDs).
