The Burns High School community is in mourning after the death of the coach credited with building the school into a championship football program.

Ron Greene died at 71 on Thursday.

The winningest coach in school history and the man for whom the school’s stadium is named guided the Bulldogs to a 174-106 overall record from 1984 to 2007.

Additionally, he led Burns to its first three conference titles and its only state championship.

Burns won Southwestern Conference co-titles in 1993 and 1994 and a tri-championship in 1997 in addition to the 1994 N.C. 3A championship.

Among the players on the 1994 team include future NFL players Tony Scott and Scottie Montgomery and current Burns High coach David Devine.

The legendary coach had endured diminished health in recent years, a decline that begin soon after he was injured on the sideline when he was Bulldogs’ head coach; Greene’s knee was injury when he was involved in a sideline pileup.

There will be a special service held at Ron Greene Stadium on the Burns campus on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Gates will open at 6 p.m. and all former players and coaches are asked to meet at the Dog House at 7 p.m.

Pro football

Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule said at Thursday’s Fan Fest at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium that he would use four quarterbacks in Saturday’s preseason opener.

Rhule said he planned to use veterans Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold for one series apiece. Those two are competing for the starting quarterback job. Rhule added that rookie Matt Corral and veteran P.J. Walker will get most of Carolina’s quarterback repetitions.

Defenders Shaq Thompson and Jaycee Horn won’t play in Saturday’s game.
