The Carolina Panthers open their 2023 preseason schedule at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium against the New York Jets on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Here is a preview of the contest:

Preseason Game 1: New York Jets at Carolina Panthers, 4 p.m.

THE SERIES: The teams have split two preseason matchup, the Jets winning in 2010 and the Panthers winning in 2012. The Panthers lead the regular season series 5-3, including a 19-14 home victory in their last meeting in 2021.

RANKINGS AMONG NFL (2022 final statistics): Carolina offense – 29th overall, 10th rushing, 29th passing. Carolina defense – 22nd overall, 18th rushing, 22nd passing. BY THE NUMBERS: 8 – Frank Reich is the 8th head coach in Carolina Panthers’ history and this will be his preseason debut. Previous head coaches are Dom Capers, George Seifert, John Fox, Ron Rivera, Perry Fewell, Matt Rhule and Steve Wilks with Fewell and Wilks serving as interim head coaches.

NOTABLE: Capers is a senior defensive assistant coach on Reich’s staff and Reich was the first starting quarterback in Panthers’ history in 1995 when Capers was head coach….
Jets linebacker Chazz Surratt is a 2015 East Lincoln High graduate where he was the 2014 Parade National High School Player of the Year who played quarterback and linebacker at North Carolina. Surratt made 3 tackles and had a pass interception he returned 13 yards in the Jets’ 21-16 preseason-opening loss against the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio….
Jets wide receiver T.J. Luther played at Wofford from 2018-21 before spending the 2022 season at Gardner-Webb as a graduate student….

Heels4Life, N.C. Hall of Fame and Carolina Barnstorming are partnering to bring a premier event to Charlotte as Heels, Huddles and Handshakes will be held at Tremont Local Drinkery & Eatery on 2000 South Blvd., on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Local fans will have the opportunity to meet and greet University of North Caroina’s Heisman Trophy hopeful Drake Maye along with Cedric Gray, Power Echols, Bryson Nesbit and Tez Walker.

Maye, a former Myers Park High star, was 2022 ACC player of the year, first team All-ACC quarterback and 2022 ACC offensive rookie of the year.
