7-6-22 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball and soccer, Legion baseball, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

The Carolina Panthers’ long-rumored pursuit a new quarterback came to an end on Wednesday when team acquired Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns pending an upcoming physical examination.

Baker Mayfield, shown here in 2018 Cleveland Browns training camp, was acquired by the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday.

A former No. 1 overall draft pick, Mayfield was acquired for a conditional draft pick in 2024 that could be as high as the fourth round.

The teams and Mayfield also agreed to share the cost of Mayfield’s $18.8 million 2022 contract – with Cleveland picking up $10.5 million, the Panthers $4.8 million and Mayfield agreed to a $3.5 million pay cut. Mayfield does have some incentives in his contract that could allow for him to recoup some of the $3.5 million he forfeited.

Mayfield, who becomes the fourth Heisman Trophy winner to play for the Panthers, became available when the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson in March in a trade with the Houston Texans.

Ironically, Carolina opens its 2022 season at home against Cleveland.

Mayfield played most of last season with a left shoulder injury, was predictably unhappy with the Browns’ move and demanded a trade.

For now, Mayfield will compete for Carolina’s starting job with Sam Darnold even as the rumor mill will now churn trade rumors for Darnold leaving the Panthers.

Mayfield, 27, was the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and led the Browns to the playoffs after the 2020 season when he threw for 3,563 yards, with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions; Cleveland’s postseason appearance was its first since 2002 and its win over rival Pittsburgh was its first since 1994.

Mayfield, 29-30 all-time in his NFL career as a starter, joins quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde, Chris Weinke and Cam Newton as former Heisman Trophy winners to play for the Panthers.

In addition to Mayfield and Darnold, the Panthers also have veteran P.J. Walker and rookie Matt Corral on their quarterback depth chart.

For Carolina, Mayfield is set to become the 22nd quarterback in the team’s 28-year history – and fifth since Newton was released after the 2019 season.
