Ashbrook High School three-star offensive lineman Trent Mitchell announced on Wednesday that he was committing to play football at N.C. State.
A 6-foot-6, 290-pound senior, Mitchell chose the Wolfpack after interest from Maryland, East Carolina, Appalachian State and Charlotte.
Mitchell took his official visit to N.C. State in late June and was very complimentary of the program when interviewed by the 247sports.com website.
“It was great,” Mitchell told the website. “The city and people… it was all great. Great environment, too. I was able to hang around the team, go downtown and eat out. I talked to a lot of the recruits on the trip, too, which was great. Those are guys who could potentially be in your recruiting class.”
Legion baseball
The Gaston Braves’ 2023 American Legion baseball season came to a close in a controversial manner on Tuesday night.
After the team left the field in the bottom of the 9th inning of a 9-all tie game, Area IV officials ruled the game a forfeit victory for Caldwell County Post 29 in a North Carolina Area IV first round playoff series.
The win gave Caldwell County a 3-1 series win in the best-of-5 series; Post 29 moves on to begin a best-of-5 Area IV quarterfinal series against Cherryville that starts on Thursday.
On Tuesday night, when the teams went to extra innings, game officials gave the Braves 3 baserunners to start the top the 8th inning in which 3 runs would score.
Since placing 3 baserunners in extra innings is not a Legion rule, Caldwell County protested. That protest was upheld and the teams replayed the top of the 8th.
In the replay, the teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the 9th when the Gaston Braves tried to file a protest during a mound visit with 1 out. When umpires said the Braves weren’t allowed to protest – which is untrue – the Braves left the field.
The loss ends Gaston’s season with a 10-9 overall record.

Golden State 98, Charlotte 83: The Hornets were more competitive in their 2nd California Summer League game but a strong 3rd quarter by the Warriors helped to a convincing win.
Rookie Amari Bailey had 17 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Nick Smith, Jr. added 14 points, Kai Jones 12 and Bryce McGowens 10 for the Hornets, who recent No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller had 6 points, 7 assists and 8 personal fouls in 28 minutes: Summer League games waive disqualifications after six fouls.
