Former East Lincoln and Lincolnton High standout Sage Surratt Lincoln County history on Sunday night when he helped the Birmingham Stallions beat the Philadelphia Stars 33-30 in the USFL championship game at Canton, Ohio.

It makes Surratt the first Lincoln County product to win a professional football title.

The state player of the year in both football and basketball at Lincolnton in the 2016-17 school year after starring for East Lincoln in his first three years of high school, Surratt played tight end for the Stallions in the championship game.

He caught one pass for nine yards for the Stallions, who finished the 2022 USFL restart with an 11-1 overall record.

An All-ACC wide receiver in 2019, Surratt had caught 11 passes for 148 yards in six regular season games.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Legion baseball

Gaston Braves 8, Hickory 7: The Braves now lead the best-of-five Area IV first round playoff series two games to none with the third game of the series slated for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at South Point High’s Raider Field.

Gastonia 3, Burke County 2: Post 23 rallied for two runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and snap a 2-all tie to give Gastonia a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five Area IV first round playoff series. Game 4 is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Morganton’s Shuey Field. Austin Parker (3 hits), Landon Jenkins (RBI triple), Jesse Osborne (RBI single), Jairo Osio (6 innings, 8 strikeouts, pitching win) and Parker Curell (1 inning, 1 strikeout, pitching save) led Post 23 in Monday’s victory.

Former South Point High standout Ray Rose announced his newest college on twitter on Monday.

A 2020 South Point High graduate, Rose announced he will be playing for Tennessee State this fall. Since TSU is a member of the Football Championship Series (FCS) Ohio Valley Conference, Rose will eligible to play immediately this season.

The No. 63 wide receiver and No. 372 overall prospect in the 2020 class by 247Sports Composite, Rose played in one game at the University of North Carolina in 2020 before transferring to East Carolina. After redshirting at ECU, Rose announced in May he had again entered the transfer portal.

 

 

 

Pro baseball

The Gastonia Honey Hunters completed their championship-winning first half season of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball with a 44-21 record after losing to visiting High Point 8-1 on Monday night.

Gastonia starts the second half of its season on Tuesday with the second game of a two-game home series with High Point.
