Three of the five North Carolina Area IV opening round playoff series winners have been determined after three days of action.

Asheville finished a 3-0 sweep of Gastonia on Sunday and Matthews (3-0 over Burke County) and Rutherford County (3-0 over Lincoln County) completed sweeps on Monday.

Hickory leads Mint Hill 2-1 and Caldwell County leads the Gaston Braves 2-1 entering Tuesday Game 4s at Hickory’s Legion Fairgrounds and Granite Falls’ M.S. Deal Stadium, respectively.

San Antonio 98, Charlotte 77: The Hornets never led and trailed by as many as 32 points and roared ahead 32-11 after the first quarter and 60-32 at halftime in the opener for both teams in the California Classic Summer League game at Sacramento.

The Spurs, who played without recent No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, got 30 points from Julian Champagnie.

Charlotte was led by rookie and recent No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller, who had 18 points, 5 rebounds, 6 turnovers and 7 personal fouls in 34 minutes as a starting forward; The 6-foul disqualification rule is waived in summer league contests.

James Bouknight and Nick Smith, Jr. had 12 points apiece and Bryce McGowens 11.
