Fuquay-Varina Post 116 overcame an early deficit to rally for a 5-2 victory over Wayne County Post 11 to win the championship game of the 2023 North Carolina American Legion baseball state tournament at Campbell University’s Jim Perry Field.

Post 116 trailed 2-0 before scoring 2 times in the 5th inning to tie the score then adding 3 runs in the 6th to take the victory that gives Fuquay-Varina (27-4) a berth in next week’s Southeast Regional in Asheboro.

The tournament most valuable player was Post 116 pitcher Andrew Clifford, who picked up 2 wins and 1 save among his team’s 4 state tournament victories. Clifford, a right-hander, has committed to play baseball at Gaston College.

Fuquay-Varina’s title is its 4th state title all-time and 2nd in 3 years. Previously, the team won 2 titles as Garner Post 232 in 1999 and 2004 (the 2004 was later vacated by N.C. Legion officials). Post 116 won the 2021 title and eventually finished as Mid-Atlantic Regional runner-up.

The Carolina Panthers on Saturday added a 4th quarterback to their roster by signing free agent Jake Luton.

A 6th-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Oregon State, Luton has spent time on the roster of the Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints.

The 6-foot-6, 224-pound Luton started 3 games for the Jaguars in 2020. Carolina had cut down to 3 quarterbacks during OTAs to give Matt Corral more reps in camp since he was limited last season due to a foot injury.

Carolina head coach Frank Reich earlier announced Bryce Young would be his starter in the Sept. 10 regular season and Corral would likely take most of the reps during the preseason games since backup veteran quarterback Andy Dalton wasn’t expected to play much if at all.
