7-29-22 roundup: Pro baseball, football and soccer, Legion baseball and softball, Auto racing, Hall of Fame

By Richard Walker

Queen City will try to become the first Mecklenburg County American Legion baseball team to win a N.C. state championship in 45 years on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Campbell University when it meets Wilmington in the 2022 state tournament title game.

Queen City is the first Mecklenburg County team to advance to the state tournament final since Pineville lost to Cherryville in the 2003 state championship game at Fayetteville’s Methodist College.

The Mustangs, who formerly went by Charlotte Post 262, are making their farthest playoff advance since being swept four games to none by Hamlet in the 1983 state championship series.

The last Mecklenburg County team to win a N.C. state Legion title was Newell Post 287 in 1977, which now goes by Mint Hill.

Queen City’s opponent, Wilmington, is the state’s all-time leading state champion with 12 state titles, most recently in the 2019 tournament held in Cherryville.
