Cherryville concluded an impressive N.C. state American Legion tournament run on Thursday with a 7-3 victory over previously unbeaten Randolph County at Campbell University.

But Post 100’s 2-1 record in pool play left it in a tie with Randolph County and host Fuquay-Varina – and Cherryville lost a tiebreaker that ends its season with a 27-13 overall record.

When three teams tie with the same record in pool play, the team that yields the most runs is eliminated; Randolph County yielded eight runs, Fuquay-Varina 13 and Cherryville 17.

As it turned out, Post 100’s 10-3 loss to Fuquay-Varina on Wednesday’s proved to be Cherryville’s undoing.

It marks the second time in the four years N.C. has used the pool play format to determine its state champion that a 2-1 team was eliminated by that tiebreaker – and each time it’s been a Gaston County team.

In 2019, the Gaston Braves lost that same tiebreaker to eventual state champion Wilmington and eventual state runner-up Fuquay-Varina when the event was hosted by Cherryville.

In Thursday’s Cherryville win over Randolph County, Zane Brockman went 5 1-3 innings with eight strikeouts and helped himself with three hits and two RBIs.

Other Post 100 standouts were Landon Hahn (3 hits), Landon Jenkins (2 hits, 2 RBIs), Ashton Pope (2 hits, 1 RBI), Jacob Hamrick (2 hits) and Joseph Webb (1 hit, 2 RBIs).

High school basketball

East Lincoln High basketball coach Jon Hancock has been named West head coach for the 2023 N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star games in Greensboro.

Hancock is preparing to start his sixth season as Mustangs’ head coach and also has previously been head coach at Lincolnton, Forestview, East Burke and Mallard Creek. He has a 436-257 overall head coaching record in 26 seasons, including 112-24 at East Lincoln, with nine regular season conference titles, four conference tournament championships, four sectional titles and five holiday tournament championships.

His best season came in 2019 when he guided East Lincoln to a 29-3 overall record and an appearance in the Western N.C. 2A finals.

The Carolina Panthers’ annual Fan Fest will be at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 11.

The event, presented by Daimler Truck North America, begins at 5:30 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 11. Tickets are $5 and go on sale to the public beginning Wednesday, July 13 at 10 a.m. on Panthers.com and Ticketmaster.

Hall of Fame

The Bessemer City Sports Hall of Fame will induct its second class on July 30 at the First Wesleyan Church of Bessemer City. The induction class will be comprised of baseball player Chris Mason, the 1986 Bessemer City High School baseball team, coach Calvin Albright, coach Marty Hatchell and football player Phillip Crosby. The keynote speaker will be 1990 Daytona 500 winner and current professional stock car driver and team owner Derrike Cope. The event, held at the church located on 510 East Alabama Avenue in Bessemer City, will start with a 5 p.m. meet and greet and include a 6 p.m. dinner before formal induction. Tickets are $25 apiece and can be purchased at the City Hall Annex and Allan Farris Community Center in Bessemer City. Business casual is the preferred attire. For information, call 704-629-5111.
