Cherryville lost 10-3 to Fuquay-Varina in the second day of the N.C. American Legion baseball state tournament at Campbell University.

Post 100 (26-13) meets Randolph County at 1 p.m. on Thursday and can advance with a win or loss but may need help in either circumstance to advance into Friday’s state semifinals.
Entering Thursday’s games, Randolph County leads the Stars division with a 2-0 record through two games while Cherryville and Fuquay-Varina are tied with 1-1 records and Hope Mills is 0-2; Hope Mills and tournament host Fuquay-Varina meet in their divisional finale on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The best scenario for Cherryville would be a victory over Randolph County and a Hope Mills win over Fuquay-Varina as it would give Post 100 the No. 1 semifinal seed from the Stars division.
A Cherryville win and Fuquay-Varina win on Thursday would create a three-way tie for the Stars title with the tiebreaker being runs allowed. Through two games in the Stars division, Randolph County has yielded one run, Fuquay-Varina nine, Hope Mills 12 and Cherryville 14.
A Cherryville loss and Fuquay-Varina win would eliminate Post 100.
And a Cherryville loss and Hope Mills win would give Randolph County the No. 1 Stars seed and create a three-way tie for the No. 2 Stars seed between Post 100, Fuquay-Varina and Hope Mills. The tiebreaker again would be least runs allowed.
In Wednesday’s loss, Fuquay-Varina broke open a 1-all tie with a six-run third inning and finished with its 10 runs and nine hits off five Cherryville pitchers.
Landon Hahn (2 hits, 1 RBI) and Jacob Hamrick (double) accounted for Post 100’s three hits.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield’s Carolina Panthers’ training camp debut came with a few mistakes, including clothing attire on the sweltering 94 degree day in Spartanburg, S.C.
“I was pretty stupid for wearing long sleeves and pants,” Mayfield said with a laugh to reporters on day in which he drew cheers from the as he walked onto the practice field.
All of Mayfield’s practice repititions came with the second offense Wednesday while incumbent starter Sam Darnold practicing with the first team. (Head coach Matt Rhule later said that would flip Thursday, with Mayfield working with the first team.)
While working with the second team, Mayfield showed the rustiness one might expect from a first practice with a new team.
“Not excited about some of the throws, accuracy-wise,” Mayfield said.
He missed a deep throw to Brandon Zylstra on a deep chance, had another go off the hands of Terrace Marshall Jr. (even as Marshall did push-ups to suggest he thought he should have made the play) and threw an interception.
“There’s a time to be aggressive and try to push the ball downfield without being stupid and being careless,” Mayfield said. “There’s aggressiveness, and then there’s carelessness. It’s a fine line between those and knowing when to take your shots and when to not get too greedy and play in the flow of the game. If you take care of the ball, most likely you’re going to win games.”
Acquired earlier this month, many expect the former Cleveland Browns’ starter to win the Panthers’ starting quarterback job.
