Three area teams begin their pursuit of a N.C. American Legion baseball title this weekend as the host Gaston Braves meet Area IV runner-up Shelby on Friday to begin the 2026 state championship tournament at Gastonia’s Sims Legion Park.

Area IV champion Cherryville begins play at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Area I runner-up Wilson.

The Braves, who host the event this year at next in Gastonia, are making their third state tournament appearance – and first since 2019.

Coach Kenneth Pasour’s team is 12-14 but has shown brilliance at times despite starting 2-5.

Top hitters for the Braves have been Brandon Washington (.423 average, 3 home runs, 17 RBIs), Daniel Onkoniewski (.389 average), Gavin Smith (.362 average, 3 home runs, 16 RBIs), Parker Stafford (.338 average, 2 home runs, 12 RBIs), Gavin McElinny (.304 average, 13 RBIs), Zeke Pruitt (.300 average, 10 RBIs) and Trey Costner (.294 average, 4 home runs, 18 RBIs) with Cooper Royster (5-3 record, 3.47 ERA), Canton Bare (3-2 record, 2 saves, 4.67 ERA) and Parker Stafford (3-4 record, 5.71 ERA) leading the pitching staff.

Shelby (20-10), coached by Charlie Ruff, went 7-2 in the playoffs and is making its 12th state tournament appearance.

Top hitters for Post 82 are Wyatt McSwain (.480 average, 7 home runs, 40 RBIs), Max Davis (.412 average, 20 RBIs), Landry Ohmstead (.388 average, 1 home run, 14 RBIs), Brock Melton (.358 average), Luke Rayfield (.333 average, 3 home runs, 22 RBIs) and Drew Dixon (.327 average, 3 home runs, 19 RBIs) with Davis (7-0 record, 1.97 ERA), McSwain (7-1 record, 3.40 ERA) and Rayfield (3-0 record, 1 save, 4.73 ERA) leading the pitching staff.

Cherryville (24-5), coached by Bobby Reynolds, had a nine-game winning streak in the regular season and have won their last six postseason games.

Pro football

Bad news struck the Carolina Panthers on the first day of training camp as linebacker Nic Scourton injured his knee and was taken off the practice field on a cart. Multiple reports later Thursday indicated he suffered a torn ACL and will miss the entire 2026 season. A second round pick in 2025, Scourton was expected to be a starter after making five sacks last season as a rookie.

Golf

The Rutherford County Sports Hall Of Fame (RCSHOF), presented by Hardin’s Drug, in conjunction with Golf Sponsors Forest City Honda and Chick-fil-A of Forest City, is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2026 T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament will be held on Friday, July 31 at the Apple Vally Golf Course in Lake Luke, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $100.00 per player or $400.00 for a team of four and covers the green fee, cart usage and lunch.

First prize for Gross and Net Winners is $600.00 per team. Other prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries. Proceeds from the event go to support the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund and registration deadline is July 21.
