Cherryville American Legion Post has another North Carolina Area IV championship.
Post 100 defeated Rutherford County 10-0 in six innings at Cherryville’s Fraley Field to sweep the best-of-three area final.
It gives Post 100 its 19th Area IV title – a record – and sends Cherryville into next week’s state tournament with a 10-game winning streak.
In Friday’s victory, Joe Webb got the pitching victory in addition to hitting a double and driving in a run and Cole Irby had two hits.
Cherryville improved to 19-5 overall while Rutherford County fell to 16-9. Both teams will play in the N.C. state tournament that begins on Wednesday.
Five of the other six teams have been determined as Fuquay-Varina, Wilmington, Port City, Rowan County and Kannapolis have wrapped up berths and Wayne County hosts Pitt County on Saturday to determine the other state tournament berth.
