Cherryville wrapped up its record 20th N.C. Area IV championship on Friday night with come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Queen City Mustangs at Fraley Field.

Post 100, which improved 25-12 with the win, next plays next week in the N.C. state tournament at Campbell University. Queen City (21-7) also advances to the state tournament.

Cherryville Post 100 (left) and the Queen City Mustangs line up before Friday’s N.C. Area IV championship game at Fraley Field.

Cherryville’s Area IV championship was its third straight and fourth in five years. Previous Post 100 Area IV championships came in 1953, 1960, 1961, 1981, 1982, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2019 and 2021.

Queen City, formerly Charlotte Post 262, was in its first Area IV championship since 1985. The Mustangs won the Area IV title in 1983 and finished as runner-up in 1982 and 1985.

Gastonia is second in all-time Area IV titles with 14, followed by Cleveland County (formerly Shelby) with 10, Caldwell County and Hickory with seven, Mint Hill (formerly Charlotte Post 9 and Newell) with five, Paw Creek and Stanley (now combined with Belmont to form the Gaston Braves) with three, Burke County, Queen City, Rutherford County, Taylorsville, Haywood County and Union County with one.

Cherryville trailed 4-1 after 3 1-2 innings before scoring twice in the fourth and once apiece in the fifth and sixth innings.

Landon Jenkins sixth-inning RBI single was the difference for Post 100, which also got a RBI single from Reid Stroupe in the second inning for an early 1-0 Cherryville lead. Landon Hahn led the Cherryville offense with two hits.

Reliever Zane Brockman went four innings with seven strikeouts for the pitching victory for Cherryville.
