East Lincoln High School softball coach Roger Wilson was named N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3A coach of the year during a N.C. Coaches Association meeting in Greensboro on Wednesday.

Wilson has been Mustangs’ head coach for two years and guided the team to a 49-4 overall record that includes 24-1 in 2022 with an advance to the fourth round of the state playoffs and 25-3 this past season with the first state softball title in Lincoln County history.

The Carolina Panthers announced on Friday they have reached a contract agreement with No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young.

According to ESPN, the deal is four years for a fully-guaranteed $37.9 million for the quarterback out of Alabama.

Selected with the first overall choice of April’s 2023 NFL draft, Young’s contract was finalized a day before rookies are set to report to 2023 training camp in Spartanburg, S.C. on Saturday. morning. Veterans are to report on Tuesday with the first practice on Wednesday.

Young, who will wear uniform No. 9, was the final member of Carolina’s draft class to get his deal finalized. Jammie Robinson, Chandler Zavala, D.J. Johnson and Jonathan Mingo had previously agreed to contracts.

A 5-foot-10, 204-pounder, Young is a Heisman Trophy winner who recorded one of the most prolific careers in Crimson Tide history. He was a two-year starter from 2021-22 and finished second in Alabama’s storied program history with 8,356 career passing yards and 80 career passing touchdowns.

At Carolina, Young is projected to start immediately under first-year Panthers head coach Frank Reich, new quarterbacks coach Josh McCown, new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, and veteran offensive coach Jim Caldwell. Other Carolina quarterbacks are veteran Andy Dalton and 2022 draft pick Matt Corral.

Young becomes the Panthers’ third quarterback selected in the first round – Kerry Collins was No. 5 overall in 1995 and Cam Newton was No. 1 overall in 2011.

Charlotte FC opened its group stage of the 2023 Leagues Cup at FC Dallas on Friday with a late rally to tie the score, then won 4-1 on penalty kids.

Charlotte’s Karol Swiderski scored on a penalty kick in the 61st minute and Ben Bender knotted the score with a goal in the 97th minute.
