The 23rd annual North Carolina American Legion baseball state tournament will return for a second straight to Barker-Lane Stadium at Campbell University.

Since 2023 was Area II’s year to host and no team from that area is hosting, Area I gets 3 teams in this year’s 8-team field with Area III and Area IV getting 2 teams and Area II getting 1.

So far, 6 of the 8 teams have qualified for the double-elimination tournament that sends its winner to the Aug. 2-5 Southeast Regionals in Asheboro.

But only 3 of those 6 know their opening round starting time as Area I champion Pitt County will play the first game of the tournament, Area I third-place finisher Wayne County will play the third game of the tournament and Area I runner-up (and host) will play the fourth game of the tournament.

Other teams that have already clinched their spots are High Point and Rowan County from Area III and Cherryville and Cleveland County from Area IV. High Point and Rowan County meet on Thursday for the Area III championship while Cherryville and Cleveland County are currently playing a best-of-3 Area IV championship series.

The other team will be determined by the ongoing best-of-5 Area II championship series between Wilmington and Carteret County.

South Caldwell won its 4th straight game and 5th game of the 5-day N.C. Junior American Legion state tournament with two victories on Wednesday to win the state title.

It was South Caldwell’s 4th state title in the last 19 years joining championships that have been won in 2005, 2014 and 2017. Only Cary has won more state titles in the 22-year history of the event.

Pro basketball

Charlotte Hornets president of basketball operations and general manager Mitch Kupchak announced on Wednesday the team has signed forward Leaky Black to a two-way contract.

A native of Concord, Black appeared in a school-record 155 games (130 starts) in five seasons (2018-23) at the University of North Carolina, averaging 5.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 26.9 minutes per game for his career.

He was named to the ACC All-Defense team in his final two collegiate seasons. During his time in Chapel Hill, Black won an ACC regular-season championship in 2018-19 and helped the Tar Heels reach the 2021-22 NCAA Tournament championship game.

In three games with the Hornets between the California Classic and NBA2K24 Summer League, Black averaged 2.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 15.7 minutes per game.
