Shelby’s Isaiah Lowe set local sports history on Tuesday when he was selected in the 11th round of the major league draft (330rd pick overall) by the San Diego Padres.

Lowe, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound right-handed pitcher, is the first player ever selected from Lincolnton’s Combine Academy. He has committed to play collegiately at Wake Forest.

Lowe this summer pitched in two games for the Cleveland County Post 82-155 American Legion baseball team, highighted by a five-inning, 14-strikeout effort in a 4-0 victory at Cherryville.

A Shelby native, Lowe played high school baseball for Arden Christ School in 2019 and 2020 and for Combine Academy the last two seasons.

Cherryville at Gaston Braves: Tuesday’s scheduled contest at South Point’s Raider Field was suspended after 1 1/2 innings with the Braves holding a 3-0 lead over Cherryville in Game 6 of their best-of-seven N.C. Area IV semifinal series.

The game will resume at 7 p.m. at South Point on Wednesday; Cherryville has a 3-2 lead in a series that’ll send its winner to next week’s N.C. state tournament.

The other Area IV semifinal, Queen City and Rutherford County split a doubleheader at East Rutherford to leave their series tied at three wins apiece entering Wednesday’s seventh game.

The Carolina Panthers’ annual Fan Fest will be at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 11.

The event, presented by Daimler Truck North America, begins at 5:30 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 11. Tickets are $5 and go on sale to the public beginning Wednesday, July 13 at 10 a.m. on Panthers.com and Ticketmaster.

During Fan Fest, fans can see the Panthers practice on the stadium field and enjoy performances by the TopCats, Sir Purr, PurrCussion and the Black & Blue Crew before the night culminates with a fireworks and laser show.
