In its sixth year as a program, Cleveland Community College’s baseball recently had its first Major League Baseball draft pick.
Jackson Nash, a right-handed pitcher, was selected in the 12th round of the 2026 draft by the Texas Rangers with the 357th overall pick on July 12 out of Longwood University.
A 6-foot-6, 235-pounder from Monroe, went 4-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 44 1/3 innings in 19 games for the Lancers. His season was highlighted by being named Big South Conference Reliever of the Week on Feb. 17.
At Cleveland Community College, Nash was a two-year standout for the Yetis.
In the 2023 season, he went 0-3 with two saves in 17 appearances. And in 2024, he 5-0 with a 4.42 in 15 appearances (10 starts) for the Yetis’ winningest team in history (39-15 record).
Legion baseball
The 2026 N.C. American Legion baseball state tournament field has been finalized.
For the first time since the inaugural event in 2000, there will be nine teams represented – the host Gaston Braves, champion Cherryville and runner-up Shelby in Area IV, champion Garner and runner-up Wilson in Area I, Beulaville and Wilmington Red in Area II and Rowan County and Union County in Area III.
Cherryville beat Shelby 9-4 on Friday night in the Area IV title game, Garner beat Wilson 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Area I title game, Beulaville visits Wilmington Red on Monday in the Area II title game and Union County visits Rowan County on Monday in the Area III title game.

Golf
The Rutherford County Sports Hall Of Fame (RCSHOF), presented by Hardin’s Drug, in conjunction with Golf Sponsors Forest City Honda and Chick-fil-A of Forest City, is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2026 T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament.
The tournament will be held on Friday, July 31 at the Apple Vally Golf Course in Lake Luke, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $100.00 per player or $400.00 for a team of four and covers the green fee, cart usage and lunch.
First prize for Gross and Net Winners is $600.00 per team. Other prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries. Proceeds from the event go to support the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund and registration deadline is July 21.
