The most frequently played North Carolina Area IV series resumes on Wednesday and the stakes are a higher seed in next week’s state tournament.

Both Cherryville Post 100 and Cleveland County Post 82-155 are guaranteed berths in the July 25 through 29, 8-team, double-elimination state tournament to be played at Campbell’s Barker-Lane Field.

Cleveland County (24-7) won the Western Division regular season title with Cherryville (20-12) finishing as division runner-up.

They’ll play a best-of-3 Area IV championship series beginning on Wednesday at Shelby’s Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium. The second game is slated for Cherryville’s Fraley Field on Thursday with a third game, if necessary, to be played on Friday in Shelby.

Cleveland County, which was called Shelby Post 82 for many years, leads the all-time series that began in 1938 by a 146-114-1 margin that includes a pair of close victories this season – 2-1 in 8 innings at Cherryville on June 12 and 3-1 at Shelby on June 26.

The teams will be meeting in the postseason for the 26th time dating to a 1943 Western area finals matchup that was played four years before the state was divided into four areas.

Cherryville has won 15 of the previous 25 playoff series, including five of the last six.

The last playoff matchup came in 2019 when Post 100 swept a best-of-five first round series three games to none.

This week’s matchup is the fifth meeting with an Area IV title on the line. Cleveland County won the 1957 Area IV championship series before Cherryville has won Area IV title matchups in 1961, 2009 and 2017.
