Cherryville American Legion Post 100 won its fourth N.C. Area IV junior Legion championship on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Shelby at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium.

Cherryville, which improved to 15-5 and coached by Stan Haynes, trailed 1-0 before scoring twice in the sixth and seventh innings to take the victory.

Bradyn Bass (double, RBI), Gracen Walker (hit, RBI), Coleman Schafer (RBI, starter for 3 innings, 3 strikeouts) and reliever Canon Whiteside (4 innings, 3 strikeouts for victory).

Cherryville has previously won a 2008 co-title and 2021 and 2025 titles in Area IV championship competition.

Post 100 advances to the 2026 Junior Legion state tournament it will host at Cherryville’s Fraley Field beginning on Saturday.

Golf

The Rutherford County Sports Hall Of Fame (RCSHOF), presented by Hardin’s Drug, in conjunction with Golf Sponsors Forest City Honda and Chick-fil-A of Forest City, is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2026 T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament will be held on Friday, July 31 at the Apple Vally Golf Course in Lake Luke, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $100.00 per player or $400.00 for a team of four and covers the green fee, cart usage and lunch.

First prize for Gross and Net Winners is $600.00 per team. Other prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries. Proceeds from the event go to support the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund and registration deadline is July 21.
