By Richard Walker

Gardner-Webb’s Mason Miller became the school’s second-highest player chosen in the major league draft on Monday when the Oakland Athletics selected him No. 97 overall in the third round.

The highest pick in program history is Zach Ward in 2005 when he was selected No. 92 overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the third round of that draft.

Miller played one season for the Bulldog, going 8-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 15 appearances (14 starts) while earning All-Big South Conference honors.

Legion baseball

Rutherford County 11, Gaston Braves 3: An early 2-0 lead wasn’t enough to keep the Gaston Braves’ season alive as Rutherford County eliminated Post 144-266 in the best-of-five quarterfinal series three games to one.

Jackson Risk (two hits, one RBI), Ayden Ledford (two hits) and Jake Bidoglio (one hit, two RBIs) led and eight-hit offense for the Braves, who finished the season with a 10-10 overall record.

Rutherford County (13-6) advances to meet Queen City (11-4) in a best-of-five semifinal series that starts on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Forest City’s McNair Field.

Mint Hill (14-3) beat Burke County 7-4 to win its quarterfinal series three games to one and will face Cherryville (14-5) in a best-of-five semifinal series that begins Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Independence High School.
