Unbeaten Big South 3A Conference championship-winning softball team Crest High took two of the three top honors in all-league done by conference coaches.

The Chargers’ Aidan Ledbetter was named pitcher of the year and Greg Earl was named coach of the year after Crest went 14-0 in league play.
Kings Mountain’s Austyn Dixon took the other top honor as she was named player of the year.

Cherryville 1, Cleveland County 0: Joseph Webb pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Cherryville edged host Cleveland County and Devin Pressley. Pressley yielded only a first-inning run on a wild pitch and fired a four-hitter with eight strikeouts. Zane Brockman had two hits and the scored the game’s only run after a first-inning double.

College baseball
Former Crest High standout C.J. Mayhue will start on the mound for East Carolina in the Friday opener of its best-of-three super regional at home against Texas.
A 2019 Crest High graduate, Mayhue is 5-1 with one save and a 2.82 ERA in 29 appearances (11 starts) this season. Mayhue was in the bullpen for 18 of his first 22 appearances of the season before becoming a full-time starter in late April. He went five innings for a 4-2 victory over Virginia in last weekend’s regional it hosted.
Also for the Pirates, Lane Hoover (Lincolnton 2018) is hitting a team-high .343 with 33 RBIs in 64 games (63 starts).
East Carolina (45-19) hosts Texas on Friday at noon in the opener. The second game is Saturday at noon and a third game, if necessary, will played at a time to be determined on Sunday.
The Pirates went 3-1 last weekend, highlighted by a 13-4 win over Coastal Carolina to advance to the super regional.
