6-8-22 roundup: Pro basketball, baseball and soccer, High school baseball, Legion baseball, College baseball

By Richard Walker

The area high school baseball season has come to a close after the 49th advance to a state championship game or series by a Gaston County school last weekend.

When Perquimans County defeated Cherryville 2-1 in a best-of-three series, it came in Cherryville’s 15th overall state finals appearance and first finals loss since 1997. It also was Gaston County’s first loss since 1998 and leaves Cherryville with a 10-5 all-time record in state championship games or series and Gaston County with a 34-15 record.

Gaston County also had its ninth 10-win playoff season – and first in six years – when eight teams combined to go 10-10 in postseason competition. Gaston County’s all-time best playoff year came in 2008 when it went 15-8 highlighted by Cherryville’s 1A state title and South Point’s Western N.C. 3A runner-up finish.

Cherryville’s playoff appearance was its county-record 55th in history and improved the Ironmen to 126-50 all-time in state playoff competition.

Shelby’s appearance was its Cleveland County-record 36th and the Golden Lions have a county-record 65-27-1 state playoff record.

In Lincoln County, where four of five teams made the playoffs and three advanced to the third round, East Lincoln made its county-record 30th playoff appearance and improved to 30-32 all-time in the state playoffs to tie West Lincoln (30-19 record) for the county record for playoff wins.

Five area teams also increase consecutive streaks of postseason apperaances – Cherryville (22 years) and South Point (16) in Gaston County, Crest (15) in Cleveland County and Lincoln Charter (10) in Lincoln County.

With Charlotte Providence (4A from Mecklenburg County), South Rowan (3A from Rowan County), Randleman (2A from Randolph County) and Perquimans County (1A) taking state titles this season, Gaston County remains the all-time state championship winner with 33 titles.

Old Gastonia Ashley has the most titles (11) followed by Cherryville (10), South Point (4), old Gastonia Highland (2), old Belmont Reid (2), Bessemer City (1), old Lowell Holbrook (1), Ashbrook (1) and North Gaston (1).

Trailing Gaston County is state baseball titles won are Guilford (29), Forsyth (18), Wake (16), Columbus (14), Mecklenburg (14), Rowan (14), Cleveland (13), Martin (12), New Hanover (11), Pitt (11), Wilson (10) and Randolph (10). Lincoln County has three state titles – old Rock Springs in 1953, Lincolnton in 1995 and North Lincoln in 2019.
