Burns High’s baseball team and East Lincoln High’s softball team completed historic state championship runs on Saturday.
Burns won its first baseball state title by completed a 2-0 series win over South Granville with a 9-5 victory at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs.
After winning 6-1 on sophomore right-hander Colby Putnam’s 4-hitter on Friday night, Putnam was one of five players with two or more hits for the Bulldogs in Saturday’s victory – and made Putnam the series most valuable player.
Marshall McGowan had three hits and Putnam, Ben Mauney, Ethan Guy and Nick Williams had two hits apiece to lead a 13-hit offensive attack.
Putnam’s sacrifice fly in the first inning gave Burns the lead for good as the Bulldogs tallied five runs in the third inning to break the game open.
Starter Josh Taylor went 4 1/3 innings to pick up the win and reliever McGowan the final 2 2/3 innings for a save.
Coach Alex Leonhardt’s team finished with a school-best 28-4 overall record that included an impressive 8-0 mark in the state playoffs.
Burns’ previous best finishes came in 2001 and 2014 when the Bulldogs finished Western N.C. 3A runner-up each season.
East Lincoln won its first softball state title with a two-game sweep on Saturday after suffering a heartbreaking loss in Friday’s best-of-3 series opener.
After losing 6-4 on a walkoff home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Mustangs fell behind 3-0 in the third inning before rallying for a 4-3 victory force a decisive third game that resulted in a convincing 12-7 win for East Lincoln.
Mustangs’ sophomore Taniyah Thomas was named most valuable player for the series – and after she went 4-for-5 with 5 runs scored in the decisive third game. Pitcher Leah Correll picked up both pitching victories on Saturday.
Coach Roger Wilson’s team finished with a school-record for victories and a 25-3 overall with an 8-2 mark in the postseason.
