Lincoln County American Legion Post 455 exploded for 10 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 13-3, mercy-rule-shortened 5-inning win over visiting Gastonia to move into first place of the Eastern Division of N.C. Area IV.
The Cardinals (4-1) trailed 2-1 before their late surge as starter Ben Carpenter and reliever Jacob Loftin combined on a five-hitter.
Tanner Martin (two hits, two RBIs), Maddux Walker (two hits, one RBI), Reese Moody (two hits), Nate Borchardt (two hits, three RBIs) and Peyton Mincey (two hits, one RBI) led Lincoln County’s 12-hit offense.
Allan Berroa and Jesse Osborne had two hits and one RBI apiece for Gastonia (2-8).
Cherryville 3, Maiden 2: Joseph Webb pitched a complete game victory for Cherryville (10-5, 9-4).
Caldwell County 5, Cleveland County 4: Porter Hall (two hits, one RBI) and Bradley Jordan (one hit, two RBIs) led Cleveland County, which fell to 9-3.
Mint Hill 3, Gaston Braves 2: Jackson Risk (two hits, one RBI) led the Braves, who fell to 5-5.
College basketball
Shelby’s Kate Hollifield announced earlier this week she had committed to sign a scholarship with Belmont University.
Hollifield, who will be a senior at Shelby this fall, has scored 1,273 career points in her first three seasons for the Golden Lions and helped the school to a 19-0 record and its first-ever girls basketball state title in March.
