Belmont Abbey College didn’t have to look far for a new women’s basketball coach.

On Monday, they announced Lincoln Charter School athletic director Kim Lusk will become the ninth women’s basketball head coach in Crusaders’ history.

Lusk had 18 of head coaching experience before she spent last season at Lincoln Charter.

Lusk first guided Ney Jersey Institute of Technology’s women’s basketball program from the 2000-01 to the 2005-06 season and later coach at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Orangeburg, N.Y. for 13 years from 2008-09 to 2020-21.

She has a 283-221 overall head coaching record.

“Having conducted an exhaustive and inclusive evaluation of the merits of all applicants, we are thrilled to name Kim Lusk as Head Coach of Belmont Abbey College’s Women’s Basketball Program,” Belmont Abbey athletic director Stephen Miss said in a school news release. “Without question, Coach Lusk’s alignment with and conviction in The Abbey’s identity, mission, and values – as well as with our implementation model – elevated her candidacy.
“Coach Lusk’s intentional, authentic, and steadfast commitment to the students she has coached, mentored, and taught over the years at previous institutions deeply impressed all involved in our search process and convinced us that she was the ideal choice going forward to better enable each and every student of ours to realize her full potential as a whole person and, thereby, become a Champion: Body, Mind, and Soul. We are very excited to work alongside Kim to realize our collective vision of building upon a strong foundation to ensure we remain perennially relevant on the national stage in the sport of women’s basketball.”

Said Lusk in a school news release: “I feel blessed to have been selected as the next head women’s basketball coach at Belmont Abbey College. I want to thank Abbot Placid, President (William K.) Thierfelder, Director of Athletics Stephen Miss and the rest of the search committee for choosing me as the new leader of the program. I am excited to join a program that has a winning tradition and cares deeply about the development of its student-athletes both on and off the court. I am extremely grateful to the Lincoln Charter School administration for the opportunity I had there this past year. I look forward to returning to the sideline and mentoring student-athletes on the basketball court, in the classroom and within the community.”

Lusk earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Southern Connecticut State University in 1999 before adding an M.B.A. from the University of New Haven in 2001. She and her husband, Jim, live in Denver, N.C., with their four children; Jim Lusk is the head golf professional at Verdict Ridge Golf & Country Club in Denver, N.C.

Lusk replaces Jason Williams, who left Belmont Abbey after nine seasons as head coach for a job at NCAA Division I USC Upstate.

 

 

 

Pro basketball

Shelby’s Gabe DeVoe has a new professional basketball team.

The all-time leading scorer in Cleveland County high school history, DeVoe will play for Fos Provence of the France LNB Pro A League.

A 2014 Shelby High graduate, DeVoe has played four season overseas since graduating from Clemson in 2018.

DeVoe played for Zielona Gora of the Polish League in 2018-19, for Djuskija Alytus of the Lithunaian League in 2019-20, for Budievelnyk of the Ukraine League in 2020-21 and for Piacenza of the Italia Second Division last season where he averaged 20.1 points per game.

DeVoe scored 2,072 points for Shelby High School.
