Five local wrestlers advanced to championship matches in the N.C. High School Athletic Association, with two taking home state titles.
Crest’s Rex Howard won the Class 3A 138-pound weight class by major decision over West Carteret’s Jacob Bennett.
And Cramer’s Zack Karagias won the Class 3A 145-pound weight class by fall over North Brunswick’s Hunter Campbell.
By virtue of their state titles, Howard and Karagias are named Big South 3A Conference co-wrestlers of the year.
Three others finished as state runner-ups.
In the Class 2A 132-pound weight class, North Lincoln’s Jorden Schlossman lost by decision to Central Academy’s Hunter Ross.
In the Class 2A 152-pound weight class, South Point’s Tyson Ryley lost by decision to Pisgah’s Lucas Whitted.
And in the Class 3A 126-pound weight class, North Gaston’s Chance Cottingham lost by major decision to Piedmont’s Tripp Collins.
The championships were held at Uwharrie Charter Academy (Class 1A), Wheatmore High School (Class 2A), Eastern Guilford High School (Class 3A) and Glenn High School (Class 4A).
In Class 1A, Alleghany’s Riley Pruitt was named most outstanding wrestler and Avery County was the team champion.

In Class 2A, Central Academy’s Kyle Montaperto was named most outstanding wrestler and Mount Pleasant was the team champion.
In Class 3A, Western Harnett’s Will Lewis was named most outstanding wrestler and Central Cabarrus was the team champion.
And in Class 4A, High Point Central’s Joe Sealey was named most outstanding wrestler and Wilmington Laney was the team champion.
Legion baseball
Cherryville 4, Caldwell 3: Zach Wilson threw a seven-hitter and struck out 10 for Cherryville, whose offense was led by Brett Mason’s two hits.
Cleveland County 2, Hickory 0: Tyler Smart threw a two-hitter and struck out seven for Cleveland County, whose offense was led by two hits apiece from Jackson Ledbetter and Porter Hall.
Gaston Braves 7, Gastonia 3: Starter and winner Grayson Guy and reliever Marshall Witherall combined on a seven-hitter for the Braves and Liam Brady (two hits), Parker Agosta (two hits), Daniel McClellan (one hit, three RBIs) and Caleb Burr (two RBIs) led the offense. Austin Wood, Allan Berroa and Parker Richards had two hits apiece for Gastonia.
Junior Legion baseball
Cherryville 3, East Rutherford 2: Braden Reynolds was the winner for unbeaten Cherryville (9-0).
