The Gaston Braves Post 144-266 American Legion baseball team honored one of its pioneers earlier this week at South Point High’s Raider Field.
Bob Cloninger, a 1946 charter member of Stanley American Legion Post 266, is believed to be one of the longest-tenured American Legion members in history at 76 years and was involved in the formation of the Braves’ baseball program.
Belmont Post 144 and Stanley Post 266 combined efforts after the 1996 season to begin play as a team with combined sponsors in 1997.
Cloninger joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 at 17 and eventually became a second class petty officer before his military discharge on June 26, 1946.
For the Braves’ baseball program, Cloninger has been a treasurer who focused on promotions and ticket sales.

Gaston Braves 11, Matthews 5: Logan Agosta (4 hits, 2 RBIs, double), Caleb Burr (2 hits, 2 RBIs, home run), Riley Hawkins (2 hits), Liam Brady (2 2-3 innings relief for win) and Chase Stewart (2 innings relief for save) led the Braves.

Gastonia swept a doubleheader at Southern Maryland on Saturday in a matchup of Atlantic League of Professional Baseball division leaders.
In the opener, former Forestview High standout Reilly Hovis was the starter and winner for the Honey Hunters in a 6-3 victory before two pitchers combined on a four-hitter in a 3-0 victory.
Gastonia improved to 40-17 while Southern Maryland fell to 42-16.
