Mountain Island Charter’s boys track team won the school’s first team state championship on Friday and Highland Tech’s Lauren Tolbert was the most valuable girls performer in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1A championships at the North Carolina A&T track and field complex.

The Raptors runners dominated the meet as Mountain Island Charter won individual championships in the 100 Meter Dash, 200 Meters, 400 Meters, the 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay.
Armonte Ferguson won the 100 with a time of 10.96 seconds, Trae Nickelson won the 200 in 22.41 seconds and Giovanni Bernard won the 400 with a 50.65-second clocking.
In the relays, Nickelson, and Ferguson teamed up with Jonavon Fisher and Reginald Taylor to win the 400-meter relay in 44.05 seconds. And Nickelson, Fisher, Taylor and Caleb Patton won the 80-meter relay with a time of 1:31.50.
Those victories helped Mountain Island Charter rack up 91 1-2 points to finish well ahead of second-place Pine Lake Prep (54 points).
Tolbert won the 400-meter run in 56.81 seconds and 800-meter run in 2:22.86 while also finishing second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash. In January, Tolbert won the 1A cross country individual state title.
Swain County won the 1A girls team title.

Legion baseball
Cleveland County 2-5, Burke County 1-0: Post 82-155 swept an American Legion baseball doubleheader from visiting Burke County Friday to improve to 6-1 overall and remain atop the Western Division of North Carolina Area IV.
In the opener, Charlie Melton threw a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and Melton, Boone Cartee, Jackson Ledbetter, Luke Reynolds, Ryam Emery and Colby Humphries had hits for Cleveland County.
In the second game, Cartee threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts and Cartee (two hits), A.J. Wylie (two hits), Luke Reynolds (one hit, three RBIs) and Jeb Bridges (one hit, two RBIs) led the offense for Post 82-155.
Lincoln County 6, Gaston Braves 2: Winning pitcher Gavin Jiminez yielded two unearned runs and two hits while striking out five in six innings and Sam Carpenter (three hits, two RBIs), Maddox Walker (two hits), Cade Doolittle (two hits) and Reece Moody (two hits, one RBI) led the Lincoln County offense.
Logan Agosta and Grayson Guy had the hits for the Braves.
Cherryville 5, Hickory 3: Noah Huss went 5 2-3 innings to pick up the pitching win for Cherryville.
Pineville 12-7, Gastonia 0-1: Gastonia suffered a home doubleheader sweep loss to Pineville at Sims Legion Park.
In the opener, Gastonia was no-hit in five innings by Brazile, who struck out nine.
In the nightcap, Austin Wood, Caleb Parker, Noah Caulder, Micheal Royston and Bryson Walker had hits for Gastonia.

Cherryville 13, York, S.C. 7: Cherryville improved to 7-0 with the road victory.

Pro baseball
The Gastonia Honey Hunters opened their 10-game homestand with a 13-11 victory over Long Island on Friday.
The victory improved Gastonia to 12-12. The Honey Hunters play Long Island again on Saturday.
Basketball camp
The 25th annual East Lincoln High School boys and girls basketball camp will be June 28-July 1, with rising seventh-10th graders participating from 8:30 a.m.-noon and rising second-sixth graders participating from 1-4 p.m.
Longtime East Lincoln coach Chip Ashley, Director of the Denver Nuggets Travel Basketball teams, is again the camp organizer. announces the date for the 25th annual basketball camp at East Lincoln High School.
Cost of the camp is $65 when you preregister and $75 the day of the camp. There will be a $10 discount for families with two children enrolled in the camps.
