Cherryville American Legion Post 100 swept visiting Asheville 4-2 and 2-0 on Wednesday night to improve to 5-1 in N.C. Area IV and 6-2 overall entering another huge home doubleheader on Thursday.

Cherryville will host nearby rival Cleveland County Post 82-155 (3-0, 3-0) in a 5 p.m. doubleheader with first place in the division on the line. It’s also the first regular season matchup between the teams since 2014. Cleveland County leads the all-time series that began in 1938 by a 142-112-1 margin.

In Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep, Cherryville got solid pitching from Brett Mason in the opener and from Brady Mackall and Noah Huss in the nightcap. Will Heavner hit a home run to lead the Post 100 offense in the first game.

Gaston Braves 5-15, Pineville 1-5: The Braves swept the road doubleheader to take over the N.C. Area IV Eastern Division lead at 4-1.

In the first game, Caleb Burr had three hits and starter and winner Parker Agosta pitched four no-hit innings before three relievers completed a four-hitter.

In the second game, which was ended by the 10-run mercy rule after six innings, Burr (3 hits, 3 RBIs) and Jackson Risk (2 hits, 3 RBIs) led the offense and four pitchers combined on a six-hitter.

Queen City 5, Gastonia 2: Dalton Thomason had two hits for Gastonia in its home loss to Queen City.

The Gastonia Honey Hunters won 7-2 at Long Island in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday to improve to 10-11 overall.

 

 

 

Basketball camp

The 25th annual East Lincoln High School boys and girls basketball camp will be June 28-July 1, with rising seventh-10th graders participating from 8:30 a.m.-noon and rising second-sixth graders participating from 1-4 p.m.

Longtime East Lincoln coach Chip Ashley, Director of the Denver Nuggets Travel Basketball teams, is again the camp organizer. announces the date for the 25th annual basketball camp at East Lincoln High School.

Cost of the camp is $65 when you preregister and $75 the day of the camp. There will be a $10 discount for families with two children enrolled in the camps.
