It could be a big week for the Charlotte Hornets.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported that veteran NBA head coach Mike D’Antoni was to meet with Hornets owner Michael Jordan on Tuesday to discuss the team’s head coaching position.
D’Antoni has long been considered a top candidate, even before Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson had agreed earlier this month to become Charlotte’s new head coach before informing the team last weekend he was no longer interested in the position.
ESPN reported D’Antoni had reportedly been scheduled to meet with Jordan but it was unclear if that sit-down ever took place; The Bleacher Report reported Atkinson was the only candidate to meet with the Hornets’ owner.
Another veteran NBA head coach, Terry Stotts, was also believed to be a finalist for the Hornets before they reached a deal with Atkinson though it’s uncertain if the team still considered Stotts a candidate – or Jordan has any plans to meet with him.
Another ESPN reporter, Evan Massey, reported on Tuesday that a trade had been discussed that would send the Hornets’ Gordon Hayward to the Indiana Pacers for Myles Turner.
Also according to Bleacher Report, the Hornets want to retain “a large portion” of former head coach James Borrego‘s coaching staff in addition to an update on upcoming restricted free agent Miles Bridges and other potential player moves.
The report says the Hornets had previously guaranteed one more year on the current contracts of Borrego’s staffers, Bridges’ top suitors could be the Detroit Piston and Indiana Pacers and some NBA sources think the Hornets will gauge trade interest in current players Terry Rozier, P.J. Washington, Kelly Oubre and Mason Plumlee this offseason.
Finally, after 97 pre-draft workouts over 16 dates from May 29 to June 19, Charlotte has the 13th, 15th and 42nd picks in Thursday’s 2022 NBA Draft.
