6-20-23 roundup: Pro football, baseball and soccer, High school athletics, College baseball, Legion baseball, NASCAR
By Richard Walker
One of the selling points for players when they sign with the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball that claims the Gastonia Honey Hunters as a member is that players are showing off their skills for other pro leagues.
And in just three seasons of ALPB competition, the Honey Hunters continue to do that over and over again.
After having 11 players signed to other pro leagues in 2021, among them Gaston County products Jake Buchanan (Los Angeles Angels) and Reilly Hovis (Toronto Blue Jays), the franchise added seven more in the 2022 season and has eight already this season.
Catcher J.C. Escarra on Monday was the latest to be signed away this year as he leaves to join Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican League.
Previous signees have been pitcher Tim Naughton (Detroit Tigers), first baseman Steven Moya (Acereros de Monclova), pitcher Marcus Walden (Seattle Mariners), pitcher Bryan Sammons (Detroit Tigers), pitcher Tyler Thomas (New York Mets), infielder Jack Reinheimer (Kansas City Royals) and pitcher/assistant coach Ian McKinney (Kiwomm Heroes of the Korean Baseball League).
