10-29-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school football, girls tennis, volleyball and soccer, College football and college cross country, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

Perhaps the Carolina Panthers’ struggles on the road against division rival Atlanta can be summed up in the franchise’s first game.

Carolina Panthers receiver Willie Green (86) during an 89-yard touchdown pass in the team’s 21-17 home win over Atlanta in Carolina’s inaugural season of 1995.

With a team that would finish with a 7-9 overall record that remains the best of any expansion team in NFL history, the historic opener saw a thrilling comeback that ended with a heartbreaking 23-20 overtime defeat at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.

A facility that twice hosted the Super Bowl but has since been imploded and replaced by Mercedes Benz Stadium was the site of the Sept. 3, 1995 Panthers’ NFL debut.

With current Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Frank Reich as starting quarterback, the Panthers trailed 20-13 when they took over at their own 20 with 1:15 left in regulation.

Reich directed a five-play, 80-yard drive that including two completions to wide receiver Willie Green, the last a 44-yarder for a touchdown with 26 seconds to play.

The father of current Crest High star receiver Javarius Green, Willie Green would have team-highs of seven receptions for 121 yards and the franchise’s second touchdown; Tight end Pete Metzelaars’ 8-yard touchdown reception from Reich with 5:58 left in the opening quarter was the game’s first score.

Willie Green’s TD reception had Carolina coach Dom Capers ready to gamble for a two-point conversion and the win.

Instead, offensive lineman Derrick Graham’s false start on the potential two-point try pushed the Panthers back five yards and they called on John Kasay to boot the tying extra point that soon would put the game in overtime.

Five plays into the extra period, Falcons’ defensive lineman Lester Archambeau sacked Reich and forced a fumble he would recover at the Carolina 31. And six plays after that, 2017 Hall of Fame inductee Morten Andersen kicked a 35-yard field goal to give the Falcons a 23-20 victory.

College cross country

Gaston College set athletic history on Saturday at the Region 10 cross country championships at the Milliken Arboretum course in Spartanburg, S.C.

Not only did the Rhinos make their first national postseason appearance since the school restarted athletics last year but sophomore runner Victoria Perez took third place in Region 10 and Gaston College’s 10 runners combined for a second-place team score.

Perez, a former Gastonia Highland Tech standout, finished as Gaston College’s individual medalist for the ninth time in the school’s nine meets and her third-place finish makes her an All-Region selection and means she will qualify for the 2022 NJCAA national championships on Nov. 12 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. Perez will become the first national individual qualifier in Gaston College history.
