A pair of No. 1 baseball seeds lead the Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties high school baseball and softball playoffs that get underway on Tuesday.
In pairings released Sunday by the N.C. Independent Athletic Association and Monday by the N.C. High School Athletic Association, 19 baseball teams and 17 softball teams will begin their pursuit of state titles as soon as Tuesday.
In baseball, Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference co-regular season champions Burns and Cherryville were the No. 1 seed in their respective classifications.
Burns (20-4) is the No. 1 2A seed and will host Southwestern Randolph while Cherryville (21-4), which defeated Burns 6-3 in last week’s conference tournament championship game, is the No. 1 1A seed and will host Gaston County’s Mountain Island Charter (4-14).
Cherryville is making its area-record 56th state playoff appearance and its area-record 23rd straight; The last time the Ironmen missed the state playoffs was in 1999. This season, Cherryville will seek to again advance to the state championship series, which the Ironmen last a year ago.
Big South 3A champion South Point (16-6) is the next-highest baseball seed at No. 5 in 3A and the Red Raiders will host Greensboro Dudley.
In softball, Southern Piedmont 1A/2A runner-up Cherryville (16-8) and Western Foothills 3A champion East Lincoln (17-1) are the highest-seeded teams at No. 5 in 1A and 3A, respectively; Cherryville hosts Mount Airy and East Lincoln hoss Montgomery Central.
Close behind are Big South 3A champion Crest (18-3) at No. 6 in 3A, Southern Piedmont 1A/2A champion Burns (18-6) at NO. 7 in 2A and Catawba Shores 1A/2A champion Lincoln Charter (14-5) at No. 8 in 2A.
Kings Mountain increased its Cleveland County-record streak with its 19th straight playoff berth with Crest close behind at 16 straight years.

Hall of Fame
The Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes will induct six local standouts at its 2023 banquet on Monday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Shelby City Park Gymnasium.
Appalachian State University head football coach Shawn Clark will be the guest speaker and the induction class will be led by six former college football standouts – former Shelby High and University of South Carolina standout Mike Haggard, former Crest High and North Carolina A&T standout Herbert Harbison and former Shelby High and Gardner-Webb standout Rodney Robinson.
Other inductees will be former Burns High and Gardner-Webb women’s basketball standout Susan Bolt Briggs, professional bass fisherman Matt Arey and longtime Shelby High team chaplain and soccer official Glenn Davenport.
Tickets are $10 apiece and can be purchased at Shelby City Park, Medical Arts Pharmacy in Shelby, plus the offices of the four public senior high schools in Cleveland County.
Along with the inductions, a number of other special awards will be presented, among them honor athlete selections from the four county high schools and Gardner-Webb, the Paris Yelton Memorial Service Award and the Fan of the Year recognized by WOHS radio.
Many athletes who also achieved special recognition in their sport will receive Certificate of Merit awards from the county sports Hall of Fame committee.
