Former North Gaston High golfing star and Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame inductee Larry Penley is among 11 members of the 2023 Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame.
Penley, who played and coached golf at Clemson, will be honored with 10 others during the Sept. 23, 2023 weekend that coincides with the Florida State at Clemson football game.
Baseball and football standout Kyle Parker, football players DeAndre McDaniel and Raymond Priester, men’s track athletes Yehzekel Halifa and Miller Moss, men’s tennis player Lawson Duncan, women’s tennis player Ani Mijacika, men’s basketball player Will Solomon, baseball player Gary Burnham and women’s track athlete April Sinkler are the other members of the 11-person induction class.
After a standout career on the Clemson golf team, Penley became the Tigers’ golf coach in 1983 and guided the program to an ACC-record 83 tournament victories including the 2003 NCAA championship.
A 2004 College Golf Hall of Fame, 2009 South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame and 2009 Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Penley coached Clemson to 10 ACC titles. That includes the 2003 title run in which he bacme the first coach to guide his team to ACC, regional and NCAA titles in the same season.
He was voted ACC coach of the year nine times and NCAA district coach of the year eight times.
Penley becomes the fourth Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln county-area product to be inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame; Harold Stowe (Belmont High 1955 graduate), Duane Ross (North Gaston 1992) and Travis Padgett (Crest 2005) have previously been inducted.
