5-27-22 roundup: Pro basketball, baseball, soccer and hockey, High school baseball, softball and girls soccer, College baseball, Legion baseball

By Richard Walker

The ACC baseball tournament semifinal pairings are set and two of the four teams can expect large crowds supporting them on Saturday when the try to advance to Sunday’s championship game.

North Carolina’s Brandon Schaeffer threw a six-hit shutout in the Tar Heels’ 10-0 win over Virginia Tech on Friday night at Charlotte’s Truist Field.

North Carolina, fresh off a 10-0 win over top-seeded Virginia Tech in Friday’s pool play finale, will meet Notre Dame at 1 p.m., and N.C. State will meet Pitt at 5 p.m.

North Carolina is the league’s hottest team with 13 victories in its last 15 games and this weekend seeks its eighth tournament title; The Tar Heels (36-19), the No. 8 seed, has previously won tourney titles in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1990, 2007, 2013 and 2019.

N.C. State has shaken off a late-season slump that included being swept at home by Wake Forest last weekend and losing six of its last nine games, is seeking its fifth tournament; The Wolfpack (35-20), the No. 10 seed, has previously won tourney titles in 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1992.

The other two semifinal teams – Notre Dame and Pitt – have never won a league tournament title.

Notre Dame (35-13) is the No. 4 seed and Pitt (29-26) the No. 11 seed.
