5-24-22 roundup: Pro basketball, baseball, soccer and hockey, High school baseball, softball and girls soccer, College baseball, Legion baseball

By Richard Walker

Gaston County’s first Olympian has a new coaching job.

Duane Ross

Former North Gaston High star Duane Ross was hired on Tuesday as University of Tennessee track and field coach.

A 1991 North Gaston High graduate, Ross is a 2017 Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame inductee who was a state champion hurdler in high school who later won ACC and NCAA honors at Clemson before competing internationally capped by his appearance on the 2004 U.S. Olympic team.

One of the fastest hurdlers in the world from 1995 to 2004, Ross first became a track coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville and later N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro before signing a five-year contract through June 2027 to run the Volunteers’ men’s and women’s track and field programs.

Ross, who has been head coach at A&T since 2012, will complete his season running the Aggies’ programs as 12 women and 13 men will compete at this week’s NCAA East Preliminary Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind.

Ross will make his transition to Tennessee following the completion of North Carolina A&T’s NCAA outdoor season.

Ross led the A&T men to a third-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships, resulting in co-National Coach of the Year honors. The Aggies men took it a step further this March when they posted a second-place team finish at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships—the best-ever finish by an HBCU program.
