5-11-23 roundup: Pro football, basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer, High school baseball, softball and tennis, College baseball and softball, NASCAR

By Richard Walker

The Carolina Panthers found out their 2023 NFL regular season schedule on Thursday night.

And the team will play on national television twice, including a Monday Night Football home opener on Sept. 18 against NFC South Division rival New Orleans.

In a nod to the past, new Panthers head coach Frank Reich’s regular season opener will be in Atlanta – or the same location as Reich made the first start at quarterback in the franchise’s inaugural season of 1995.

Carolina’s second nationally-televised game will be Nov. 9 at Chicago in an 8:15 p.m. Thursday Night Football game. The contest will match the two teams that made an offseason that netted the Panthers the No. 1 overall pick it used on Alabama quarterback Bryce Young and sent top Carolina receiver D.J. Moore to the Bears.

The Panthers other home games at Oct. 1 (Minnesota), Oct. 29 (Houston), Nov. 5 (Indianapolis), Nov. 19 (Dallas), Dec. 17 or 18 (Atlanta), Dec. 24 (Green Bay) and Jan. 6 or 7 (Tampa BAy).

The Indianapolis contest gives Reich a chance to coach against a team where he was previously a head coach.
