Gastonia’s Harold Varner III struggled in Saturday’s unseasonable weather at The Master’s on Saturday.

A 2008 Forestview High graduate, Varner shot a eight-over-par 80 to fall from a tie for sixth to a tie for 36th in arguably the PGA’s most prestigious annual event.
Varner, who tees off at 11:10 a.m. for Sunday’s final round, birdied No. 3 but had nine bogeys on a day where temperatures hovered in the 50s and chilly winds made it feel like much colder.
In Thursday’s opening round, Varner eagled one hole (No. 13) and birdied four others (Nos. 2, 8, 14 and 16) to highlight his debut performance in the event.
In Friday’s second round, Varner had four more birdies (Nos. 2, 10, 13 and 16).
Varner is 15 shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler, who is nine-under-par in his first three days.
