Five area players were announced on Thursday as members of the West team that play in this summer’s annual N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star football game.
They are Mason Avery of West Lincoln, Myles Jackson of Forestview, Justin Lipscomb of Shelby and Kahari Surratt and Lemont Wilson of Burns.
Players were nominated by their respective head coaches and then the coaches of the all-star teams pick the players who will represent the East and West.
This year’s game will be played July 19 at Greensboro Grimsley’s Jamieson Stadium.
East Duplin football coach Battle Holley will be the head coach of the East team and will be assisted by Matt Biggy (Gates County), Andrew Farris (Northern Nash), Bruce McClelland (Terry Sanford), Antonio Moore (Northeastern) and Darrin Stinson (Franklinton).
The West team will be led by Kennedy Tinsley, the head coach at Mallard Creek, and his assistants are Jim Beatty (North Henderson), Brian Hales (Butler), Josh McGee (Reagan), Rodney Pruett (Erwin) and Norman Weeks (Grimsley).
This year’s game marks the end of an era as the contest, which started in 1949, will be moving from the summer to the fall in the upcoming 2023-24 school year.

Piedmont Community Charter’s Grace East signed with the Cleveland Community College Yetis.

East became PCC’s all-time leading girls basketball scorer this past season and finished with 1,161 career points.

Former Forestview High standout Harold Varner III shot a 1-under-par 71 on Friday in the second round of The Masters in Augusta, Ga.
He’ll enter Saturday’s resumption of the tournament tied for 29th with a 2-day score of 143.
A 2008 Forestview High graduate, Varner won’t know his third round tee time until the second round is completed beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
This week is Varner’s second appearance in the PGA’s most prestigious tournament; He shot a three-over-par 291 to finish tied for 23rd in the 2022 event.
