4-3-22 roundup: College baseball and basketball, Pro basketball and soccer, High school baseball and softball, Middle school baseball and girls soccer

By Richard Walker

Two local baseball programs had a good weekend as Gaston College recorded a three-game sweep to reach 30 victories and Belmont Abbey won two of three games at perennial power Mount Olive.

Gaston College celebrates after completing three-game weekend sweep of Patrick & Henry Community College.

Gaston College won 7-4 and 4-3 in extra innings on Saturday then won 9-8 on Sunday to improve to 30-2 overall and 20-1 in Region 10’s Division II West Division. The Rhinos, who are ranked in the top 5 of all three NJCAA Division II poll, will take Monday off before returning to practice Tuesday to prepare for a 6 p.m. Wednesday home game against Division II rival Cleveland Community College at Gastonia’s S22-ims Legion Park.

Belmont Abbey won 8-7 on Friday, lost 7-6 in Saturday’s doubleheader opener before winning 7-5 in the nightcap to clinch its first series victory over the Trojans since 2018. The Crusaders (22-13, 13-7) are in third place of Conference Carolinas entering four home games this week; Tuesday at 6 p.m. non-conference game against Lander and a three-game league series against Erskine on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
