Gaston College and Belmont Abbey closed their regular seasons with impressive home victories on Saturday.
Gaston College won 14-2 win over visiting Hosanna Bible College at Gastonia’s Sims Legion Park gave Gaston College its second straight 41-9 regular season record.
The Rhinos honored 23 players on “Sophomore Day” before the game.
Twelve of the 23 were two-year players – catcher-infielder J.D. Yakubinis, infielder Miller St. John, infielder Enrique Wood, pitcher David Sande, outfielder Hayden Brandon, outfielder Wade Kelly, outfielder Konni Durschlag, pitcher Hunter Shew, pitcher J.D. Everett, pitcher Tyler Parks, catcher Pierson Gunnell and infielder Matthew Dobson.
The 11 one-year players to be honored were outfielder Trey Truitt, infielder-outfielder Adam Quintero, pitcher Derek Vartanian, pitcher Nolan Straniero, infielder Preston Hall, pitcher Darrell Johnson, pitcher Hayden Ridenhour, pitcher Alex Jankowski, pitcher Kyle McKernan, pitcher Jaxson Mangum and pitcher Evan Lewis.
Gaston College returns to action on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Louisburg in the first day of the Region 10 tournament at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, S.C.

Belmont Abbey completed a doubleheader sweep of King with high-scoring 17-10 and 12-8 victories on “Senior Day” at Abbey Yard.
Five seniors – Patrick Taylor, Scotty Reeves, Grant Lohmeier, David Dobson and Ben Ferguson – were honored before the doubleheader.
Belmont Abbey closes the regular season on a six-game conference winning streak and finishes the regular season with a 36-14 overall record and a 17-3 mark in Conference Carolinas play.
The Crusaders next play in the Conference Carolinas Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play No. 8 seed Emmanuel at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gastonia’s CaroMont Health Park.

49ers add NFL draft pick: Charlotte 49ers wide receiver Grant DuBose was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft to become DuBose becomes the fifth 49ers player taken in the NFL Draft in the last seven years and the first 49ers’ offensive skill player to be drafted.
DuBose, who shared a team-lead with a record nine touchdown catches in 2022, spent two years in the 49ers program. In his two-year career, he ranks third all-time receiving touchdowns and fourth in receiving yards. He caught 15 touchdown passes in his two seasons and became the fourth 49er to surpass 1500 career receiving yards with 1684. He put up 892 receiving yards in 2021 and 792 in 2022. Both numbers rank in the 49ers top six single-season performances. He led the 49ers in TD catches in both of his seasons.
